Jarhead bear

16 August 2010 16:30 GMT

A bear cub in Florida has been saved after spending 10 days with a jar stuck on his head.

The animal - who lives in the Ocala National Park - is thought to have poked his head into the container while rummaging through rubbish for food and was just days away from dying due to starvation.

Fortunately, officials were able to remove it after some of the park's residents saw the bear wondering around.

It took 10 days to find him and his mother was put to sleep with a tranquilising dart while officials removed the container from the cub's head.

Biologist Mike Orlando said: "Although the story appears to have a happy ending, it truly illustrates one of the worst things that can happen when wildlife gets into garbage."
