Saira the Staffordshire bull terrier now has the chance to become a mum following the rare - so rare that no statistics on it exist in the UK - 'sex assignment' surgery.
The two-year-old's owner, John Conchie, believed all along his pooch was a lady until the vet informed him otherwise during a routine check-up.
According to the 46-year-old, Saira had always been interested in 'boy dogs' so he had no reason to suspect anything was awry.
The Manchester surgeon who carried out her reassignment operation revealed that he hadn't previously come across a canine hermaphrodite during his 30 years of practice.
It was an x-ray that uncovered Saira's two sets of sexual organs, with two separate sessions of surgery required to complete her journey to femininity.
As rare as her condition is, Saira's case comes not long after the story of Georgie - another Staffordshire bull terrier, funnily enough - who was abandoned when her owner discovered that she, too, was a hermaphrodite.
Staff at Manchester Dogs Home described how, after her gender surgery, Georgie enthusiastically embraced her new existence as 'a real lady' who even fluttered her eyelids 'to get her way'.
