Four 'ugly' mutant albino turtles donated to aquarium

Four mutant albino turtles that have been donated to an aquarium are set to be 'heroes in a soft shell', with their new owners considering naming them after the legendary Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles.
Staff at the centre are now considering naming the foursome Leonardo, Michaelangelo, Donatello and Raphael after the animated series Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles.
The Chinese soft-shelled turtles were handed in to the Blue Reef Aquarium by a university student who was moving out of the city and felt unable to look after them any longer. (We like to believe this is because the turtles spent their days battling the evil Krang and his sidekick Shredder.)

Blue Reef's Lindsay Holloway said: 'With their soft shells, extremely long neck and tube-like nostrils which they use like a snorkel they are definitely one of the world's most unusual species of turtle.
'Some people say they are ugly but I think they're adorable.

'The fact that these individuals are also albino makes them even more peculiar to look at.'

The turtles, which are albino through genetic mutation, are thought to be five years old and are expected to live till they are 30. They will be added to an open-top freshwater display of giant carp.

'Once fully grown they can reach up to 30 centimetres in length and will provide a fascinating new addition to our giant carp display.'
