More than 4,500 fossils found as dig wraps up

Aspen Daily News Staff Report

The major part of the Ziegler Reservoir dig operation wraps up today, having unearthed more than 4,500 fossils from 20 different animals since the monumental discoveries began last fall.

Besides the known mastodons, mammoths, bison, sloths and camels, scientists and dig crews also found 13 types of smaller animals, the Denver Museum of Nature & Science announced Thursday.

Other remains found included: otter, muskrat, bat, beaver, chipmunk, rabbit, mouse, salamander, frog, lizard, snake, fish and bird.

“We worked as quickly as possible to pull this treasure trove of fossils from the ground, so our work to identify all of the species we have found will begin in earnest once we have time for further analysis back at the museum,” said Dr. Kirk Johnson in a press release.

The leader of the excavation and the museum’s vice president of research and collections, Johnson predicted the recovery of 30 to 40 different animals, along with many well-preserved plant species.

“Our work to really understand these findings and maximize the site’s scientific value is just beginning,” he said.

The full dig crew will work through today and return to Denver on Saturday. Reservoir construction will resume next week, accompanied by a handful of museum staff should more fossils be found.

The dig’s top scientists will also still be in town for fundraising and a final press conference on Thursday that Gov. John Hickenlooper is expected to attend.

PARKER, Colo. -- Doctors have removed a stubborn moth from a 12-year-old Colorado boy's ear after trying in vain to kill it. In the end, the moth was removed with tweezers. Wade Scholte of Parker, southeast of Denver, says the moth crawled into his ear Sunday night after he fell asleep. He awoke screaming and crying.

Farmer celebrates 'panda cow' birth

A rare miniature cow with markings similar to a panda bear was born on a farm in northern Colorado.

The so-called "panda cow" born in Larimer County is thought to be one of only about 24 in the world.

The Loveland Reporter-Herald reported the male calf named Ben was born on Friday morning. His mother is a Lowline Angus cow.

Farmer Chris Jessen raises miniature cattle and also owns a miniature kangaroo on his hobby farm.

The miniature panda cow is the result of genetic manipulation.

A white belt encircles the animal's midsection, and the cow has a white face with black ovals around the eyes, giving it a panda-like appearance.

The mini-cattle are bred solely as pets. Mr Jessen said panda calves can sell for 30,000 US dollars (£19,200)

Mysterious horse deaths have family seeking answers

EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. -- A Colorado family is searching for answers after finding their horses carved up and left to die.

"I just started to cry," Glenda Schneider told FOX31 News.

Schneider discovered two of her horses had been mutilated, with their throats slit and their chests cut open. Their genitals, tongues and eyes had been removed.

Yet, there was no blood, no footprints, and no witnesses to the crime.

"You wonder what happened," Schneider said. "What took place? What did it?"

The Schneider‘s filed a report with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Department and they contacted paranormal investigator Chuck Zukowski.

Zukowski examined the horses and determined the horses died from unknown causes, and said there was plenty of evidence indicating the animals were mutilated.

"The straight cuts, the open rib cage, the flesh taken off. Those are red flags," Zukowski said. He believes UFO’s could be to blame.

The Schneider’s are not alone. Paranormal investigators say there have been 8 animal mutilation cases in Colorado in just the past year.

Hundreds of animal mutilation cases across the country have been documented since 1967.

But the El Paso County Sheriff’s Department disagrees with Zukowski's assertion.

They believe the horses were killed by predators, though they admit investigators weren’t able to examine the horses as closely as they would like to because the animals were so badly decomposed.

Still, the Schneider’s insist they know what predator attacks look like, and what happened to their horses is anything but.

They fear whatever killed their horses could come back, and it has shattered the peace on their quiet ranch.
