Freak lobster with two cutting claws has new friend - with two crushing claws

A million-to-one freak lobster with two cutting claws caught in British waters has found a friend in another mutant crustacean -- with two crushing claws.

Lobsters usually have one cutting claw and one crushing claw - which are each used to catch food such as crabs.

They grab their prey with the sharp cutting claw while the powerful crusher claw is used to break open the shell.

But a lobster - nicknamed Popeye - with two crushing claws has now been found by fisherman Steven Tregeer off St Just in Cornwall.

The discovery comes just weeks after a lobster dubbed 'Edward Scissorhands' with two cutting claws was found off the coast of nearby Mylor.

The pair of freak crustaceans are now being cared for at Newquay's Blue Reef Aquarium.

Blue Reef's David Waines said: ''On his own Edward was an extremely unusual find.

''So for Popeye to have been caught within the space of just a few weeks is nothing short of extraordinary.

''We now have a pair of lobsters with the correct number of cutting and crushing claws - the only problem is they're the wrong way round.''

Lobsters are among the planet's oldest inhabitants with fossil remains found dating back more than 100 million years.

Their prey consists of crabs, which are grabbed by the legs using the cutter claw while the crusher claw is usually used to break open the carapace.

Five-legged toad surprises dog walker

Faye Sweeney found the five-limbed amphibian at the Attenborough Nature Reserve in Nottinghamshire.

A regular walker in the reserve, the 27-year-old found the toad in the middle of the path last week, but as she picked it up she found it had an unusual extra leg.

Erin McDaid, communications manager at Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust, said Ms Sweeney released the toad but then reported it to charity Froglife.

He said: 'She is a regular dog walker in the reserve and was walking dogs when she found it on the path. The only reason she picked it up was because it was a hot sunny day so she wanted to put it in the shade.

'Then she noticed it had five legs - it has an extra front leg.'

Ms Sweeney, from Chilwell, Nottingham, said: 'I was just out on the path walking down with three dogs so didn't want it to get trampled or dry out in the sun. When I picked it up I saw it had an extra front leg so I took a couple of photos and popped it in the undergrowth.

'It seemed to be getting on fine though, it was nice and healthy.

'I've never seen any photos of frogs or toads with extra front legs, the pictures I've seen seem to be back legs, so I think it's quite unusual.'

Chick gets slippers made to straighten his feet

July 5, 2010

A tiny chick which was born with curled toes has been given a pair of specially made slippers to allow him to walk.

When the baby African Crowned Crane was born at a wildlife centre in Cornwall staff noticed a defect with his feet.

Because his toes were curled he couldn't walk and bosses at Paradise Park in Hayle were worried for the bird, which had been abandoned by his mother.

Staff started hand-rearing him and put bandages on his feet to allow him to walk upright. When that worked, they decided to make the tiny 2.5cm slippers.

The little bird - which should grow to 4ft tall - is now happy running around with his other furry friends… which are all jealous of his footwear.

Park curator David Woolcock said: "The chick is doing very well and the park keepers take it for walks to strengthen those legs."

Bald penguin gets sunburn protection wetsuit

June 15, 2010 5:10 PM

A bald penguin at a UK wildlife centre have been given a specially designed wetsuit to protect him getting sunburn over the summer.

Ralph, a ten year old Humboldt penguin suffers from a moulting problem which causes him to lose all of his feathers within a couple of days.

This means that unlike other penguins - who moult as new feathers grow - his pink skin is left exposed and he could easily get sunburn.

A spokesperson for Marwell Wildlife in Hampshire said the wet suit is made from neoprene, has velcro fastening and was made to measure… well even we didn't think you could buy penguin wetsuits in the average surf shop.

Dave White, Head Keeper for the penguins added: "The stretchy material lets Ralph move around normally.

"The added benefit of the Velcro means that as his new feathers grow through we will be able to adjust it’s size, so it’s always comfy for him.

"At the moment he is sitting on two eggs with his partner Coral and she seems happy enough with his new look."

My baby is a snake

TEENAGER CLAIMS A SNAKE FATHERED HER SON
BY FRANCINAH BAAITSE

A bizarre claim by a 17-year-old girl that the father of her two-year-old child is a snake, has left the small village of Tshimoyapula in the Central District in a state of shock and wonder. The teenage mother, who gave birth while at a tender age of 15, has refused to single out the man who fathered the child, and has stuck to the story first peddled by the traditional doctor that her boy child is a snake, because the “father is a snake”. But the villagers swear she has a boyfriend.

The girl (whom because of age would stay anonymous) came to reveal the long kept “secret” to her shocked family last year after a traditional doctor told the family that the baby was not human.

The girl who was unofficially adopted by a Veterinary officer some eight years ago, told her parents that for all that time, she was made to sleep with a snake at the adoptive grandmother's place in the Shorobe cattle post in Maun area.

The girl repeated the same bizarre story to The Voice team at her mother's place in Tshimoyapula on Monday. She said she always hears a male voice calling out her name and asking her to come to Maun and her suspicion is that the snake is calling her. Narrating her nightmares, the tearful teenage mother said:

“I was sleeping one night when suddenly the floor started rising. It was as if the whole house was being uprooted. So I took matches and lit the lamp and was met with a horrifying scene. A huge head of a black snake was peeping out from a crack in the floor. Fear just escaped me and I watched with a bit of shock however.”

She said she left the hut and went to narrate what just happened to the old woman, but instead of coming to investigate, “she screamed back from inside her hut and commanded me to go back to sleep.”

When she returned to her hut, she alleged, the snake was now resting its head on her blankets.

“It looked like a normal snake to me except for the abnormally big eyes. I ignored it and got into the blankets. When I woke up in the middle of the night it was sleeping right next to me but I was not scared and went back to sleep. When I woke up in the morning my underpants were removed and it felt as if I had been sexually used during my sleep,”

The girl explained that in the morning she left the snake sleeping and continued with household chores and cooked breakfast. This, she said, was the beginning of the long affair with the snake.

“It was almost natural. Nobody told me to put the food in the house. I just cooked and put the food in the house and left. I'll return a few minutes later to consume the leftovers. When I complained about the snake the old woman became irate and her children did not believe my story,” she said.

The ritual she said, continued for years until she became pregnant and was taken back home for delivery period.

According to the girl’s mother, Oipoletse Otsile, 53, the child was abnormally born with a fully-grown skull without a soft spot (phogwana). Confused, they took the baby to a traditional healer who then revealed that what they had brought before him was not a human being but a baby snake.

It was then that the girl “confessed” that she did not give birth to an ordinary baby but a son to a snake.

“As the boy grew he started acting like a snake. At time he would lie on his belly and start moving forward in wriggly motion of a snake. When he does that he cries,” explained Otsile.

The family now fear for the child's life, as he is already a discussion point in the village and stigmatised. Even more traumatic is the revelation by the traditional healers and prophets from the African churches have told them that the snake is waiting for the child to grow and it would take him away.

“I believe them because sometimes he wakes up in the middle of the night and crawls outside. I once saw him standing with the snake, which then retreated into the darkness when it saw me,” pointed out the teenager.

Despite rumours of a boyfriend, the girl's father Kehaletse Tsapaletsile buys his daughter story.

“What we have discovered is that it has turned people’s minds and makes them see him as human although in actual fact he is a snake,” Tsapaletsile said.

He had lodged the case with the customary court and demand that the Veterinarian’s family bring forward the boy who supposedly impregnated his daughter.

“They said they will come back to pay for the damages (tshenyo). They told us they know the man or boy who impregnated her so they have to bring him forward together with his parents so that we talk this thing over,” added the teenage mother’s aunt Shadi Kebonyemotho.

Kgosi Lenkagetse Keipheditse of Tshimoyapula asserted that the case is going to be tricky to handle.

“Superstitions and witchcraft issues are difficult to solve because they do not have solid facts. However, we have spoken to the District Commissioner and we are hoping to bring the parents together and resolve the matter,” revealed the chief.

The Veterinarian (whose names and that of her family members is withheld) said she does not know anything about the snake because after “borrowing” the girl from her mother she passed her on to her sister who stayed with her in Maun.

“But the girl refused to go to school and always went to the cattle post with my parents,” she said.

The Vet’s sister remembers the girl complaining about the snake but insisted that she never said she was having any sexual contact with the snake. “What we know is that she had a boyfriend at the cattle post and she told us he is the one who made her pregnant. We confronted the boy and he admitted that he is the father to the baby,” said the lady whose family is accused of being responsible for the snake affair.

The child is human – Dr Mazonde

The child looks like a normal two-year old boy except for a bit small head. Medical science has a different take.

Dr Patson Mazonde, a paediatrician at Boitekanelo Children's Clinic in Gaborone revealed that it is a normal occurrence for a child to be born with a fully developed skull although it is an unhealthy condition. The condition, he said, is called Craniosynostosis and can be fatal if left untreated.

“They should forget the fear of the snake and take the child for medical attention. Usually children with such a condition have small heads. Because of the hard skull their brains do not develop well and they can die if the skull is not opened up to create space for the development,” he explained.

Furthermore, said Mazonde, it is utterly impossible for a human being to give birth to any other creature than a human being. “It was a human being she slept with,” he corrected.

Craniosynostosis is a condition in which one or more of the fibrous sutures in an infant skull prematurely fuses. This results in restricted skull and brain growth.

Because the brain cannot expand in the direction of the fused suture, it is forced to grow in the direction of the open sutures, often resulting in an abnormal head shape and facial features. Some cases of Craniosynostosis may result in increased pressure on the brain and developmental delays.

It is estimated that Craniosynostosis affects 1 in 2 000 live births. It can be the result of an inherited syndrome or sporadic. In sporadic cases, the cause is unknown.

The dog who is allergic to cats and only eats potatoes

Tom Phillips - 10th February, 2010

Dogs are famous for enjoying the simple things in life - notably chasing cats and eating meat. But that's not the case for unfortunate Joey, a dog who is allergic to cats, meat, and pretty much everything else except potatoes and porridge.

Joey, an Alsatian-Collie crossbreed, gets a nasty rash if he eats meat or chases a cat. His allergy is also brought out by activities as diverse as running through grass or jumping into water.

Now his owners, Lisa McCormack and Scott Muirhead, feed him a diet of nothing but potatoes and porridge - as they're the only things they've found he isn't allergic to.

Mr Muirhead said: 'Joey was consistently breaking out in boils and sores and we were scratching our heads over why. After a year of trips to the vets we finally got a special blood test performed to see what was going on.

'Our local vets were baffled,' he added. 'They had never seen anything like it in a dog before.'

They now hope that a treatment of antibiotics combined with specialised dog food will help Joey avoid his allergies.

'He's looking much better,' said Miss McCormack.

Fat albino hedgehog put on diet

An albino hedgehog has been put on a special diet after his weight ballooned to three times the size of a normal one.

Snowball currently weighs 1.5 kilograms, compared to a normal hedgehog who weighs about 500 grams.

He was taken to St Tiggywinkles Wildlife Hospital in Buckinghamshire by a member of the public after experts were called in to help shed his extra weight.

He has been placed on a diet of low-fat kitten biscuits and are putting him through his paces with running and swimming sessions. He has so far lost 38 grams.

Les Stocker, the founder of St Tiggywinkles, told Sky News: "He was very, very fat. Hedgehogs just eat and eat and eat. If they have got food there, they will eat the lot.

"We may let him hibernate because that will help him lose weight. He’s got enough fat to survive hibernation and that might be the answer."

Snowball, who was taken to the hospital in October, will remain at St Tiggywinkles until the summer, when he will be released into a protected area for other albino headgehogs. Only one in every 10,000 hedgehogs is born with albinism, but the condition makes him particularly vulnerable to predators. The condition means they have no melanin pigment in their skin, eyes and spikes.

Zookeepers baffled by bare bears at zoo in Leipzig

The Daily Telegraph
November 06, 2009

  • Zoo bears lose all of their body hair
  • Some experts blame a genetic defect
  • Bears do not seem to be suffering
YOU would have thought a fur coat would have been the ultimate bear necessity.

But not for unfortunate Dolores, who has lost all her body hair and has been left with just a few tufts around her head.

Vets have been left baffled by the condition of the spectacled bear, who lives at a zoo in Leipzig.

And Dolores isn't the only one. The sudden hair loss has affected all female bears at the zoo.

Some experts believe it could be due to a genetic defect although the animals do not seem to be suffering from any other affliction.

The bears normally have fluffy dark brown fur and would now be growing a thicker coat to keep warm during the winter.

Instead they have developed nasty rashes and inflammations.

Unfortunately for the bears, their lack of hair has been pulling in the crowds, with hundreds more people than normal visiting the zoo to see the bare, wrinkly animals.

Hopefully the zoo will be turning up the heat in their enclosure as the German winter approaches.

Spectacled bears are native to South America and are sometimes called Andean bears, after the mountain range they occupy.

They are South America's only native bear and they're typically distinguishable by eyeglass-shaped markings on their faces.

The Chinese cat girl

21 October 2009

A six-year-old dubbed "cat-girl" has baffled doctors after thick grey hair started growing uncontrollably all over her body.

Until just a few months ago little Li Xiaoyuan had just a tiny birthmark on her back.

But hair started to grow from the mole — and quickly spread over her entire back and is now starting to grow on her arms and face.

Her dad Li Yan said: "Doctors told us it was just a birthmark even when it started spreading but now it covers half her body.

"None of the other children want to play with her they are calling her cat-girl and are really mean."

Surgeon Dr Lou Zhongquan of Zhaoqing City Dermatological Hospital believes the youngster may be suffering from a rare disease that sends normal moles out of control.

He said: "If they were smaller we could use laser treatment but even if we removed these with surgery there is a very strong chance of post surgery haemorrhage."

Snake with foot found in China

A snake with a single clawed foot has been discovered in China, according to reports.

Published: 10:30AM BST 14 Sep 2009

Dean Qiongxiu, 66, said she discovered the reptile clinging to the wall of her bedroom with its talons in the middle of the night.

"I woke up and heard a strange scratching sound. I turned on the light and saw this monster working its way along the wall using his claw," said Mrs Duan of Suining, southwest China.

Mrs Duan said she was so scared she grabbed a shoe and beat the snake to death before preserving its body in a bottle of alcohol.

The snake – 16 inches long and the thickness of a little finger – is now being studied at the Life Sciences Department at China's West Normal University in Nanchang.

Snake expert Long Shuai said: "It is truly shocking but we won't know the cause until we've conducted an autopsy."

A more common mutation among snakes is the growth of a second head, which occurs in a similar way to the formation of Siamese twins in humans.

Such animals are often caught and preserved as lucky tokens but have very little chance of surviving in the wild anyway, especially as the heads have a tendency to attack each other.

Piglet has two mouths and three eyes

A Chinese farmer was shocked when one of his new piglets was born with three eyes and two mouths.

The piglet was among eight newborn piglets at Liu Dingsheng's farm in Chongren County, Zhejiang province.

"We were shocked to see such a weird looking creature," said Liu, "I don't really know what to do with it."

Liu told People's Daily that the mother was a four-year-old sow which was completely healthy and normal.

A local vet said the abnormality may have been caused by genetic mutation or feed pollution.

As the world's fastest developing industrial nation, China suffers heavily from environmental pollution.

No fooling: This bunny has two noses

By Michael P. Mayko
STAFF WRITER

MILFORD -- It's soft, it's cuddly and it's cute -- even though it has two noses.

That's right, a baby bunny with two noses.

"In my 25 years in the pet shop business, I've never had anything like this," said Tom Fomenko, Sr. owner of Purr-Fect Pets, Inc. 282 Boston Post Road.

That means no two-headed snakes, no five-legged hamsters and no three-winged birds.

"Nothing at all," he said.

That's until March 24. That's when Allison Noe, a store employee, discovered the oddity while inspecting a batch of newly-delivered, six-week old dwarf rabbits.

When she picked up a tri-colored baby boy bunny and looked at its face, she did a double take. The rabbit has two separate noses each with two nostrils. "I brought it up to the front counter to show everyone," she said.

Tiana Nieves, an employee who once worked at for a Florida veterinarian, could not believe what she was hearing.

"So I took a look," she said. Sure enough, the bunny had two noses.

"It makes it doubly cute when it crinkles and wiggles both," Nieves said.

Jeremy Reynolds, the store's manager, also never saw any such animal anomaly in his 16 years in the business.

He said the bunny gets along with the whole litter.

"It's not treated differently," he said. "It eats like the others. It drinks like the others and it hops around like the others."

Gregg Dancho, director of the Beardsley Zoo in Bridgeport, said there's usually two reasons for such deformities.

"It's mostly genetic," he said. "Most of the dwarf bunnies pet stores sell are bred for sale. There's a lot of in-breeding going on because the breeders are looking to produce them en mas."

But the anomaly can also be caused by something in the environment.

"Maybe the parents got into poison or pesticides used to control pests," he said.

But Dancho said people interested in buying a dwarf rabbit or any animal as a pet should really think about what they are doing and not buy on impulse. "When that animal comes home you will have to take care of it," he said.

Additionally, he warned cute baby animals like ducks, chicks and rabbits, which people buy as Easter gifts, do grow up.

"Some owners can't take care of them and we can't take in hundreds of these," he said. So a lot get euthanized or left to fend for themselves..

He suggests people become informed consumers and read up on the animal's habits and care before buying them.

"A dwarf rabbit could live as long as 10 years, be litter trained and stay in doors," he said. "But they will have a smell. You shouldn't buy a pet then keep it outside in a hutch. Many of these animals won't acclimate to outdoor conditions and health could become a factor."

Store employees are now vying to name the animal.

Reynolds like Cyrano de Bergerec, because of the long nose.

Nieves prefers Deuce.

Meanwhile, store employees have become attached to the bunny and are hoping it won't be sold.

"It would be a hot commodity for us," Nieves said.

If it does get sold, Fomenko said it will got to a special place and not the highest bidder.

"It's not just another animal. It's special, " the owner said.

Mystery condition leaves hedgehog with no spines

An animal hospital is appealing for help to fix a hedgehog with no spines.

By Anita Singh
Last Updated: 4:17PM GMT 16 Mar 2009

Spud was found wandering in a garden and taken to Tiggywinkles Wildlife Hospital in Aylesbury, Bucks, last August. Experts are baffled by his condition, which has caused his skin to dry and his spines to fall out. The hospital is asking practitioners of alternative medicine to suggest possible remedies.

The bald animal was christened Spud by hospital staff because, when curled up into a ball, he resembles a potato. He cannot be released back into the wild because hedgehogs are defenceless without their spines and he has no insulation against the cold. Every day, he has a warm bath and a massage with baby oil to keep his skin soft.

Les Stocker, founder of Tiggywinkles, said: "He's part of the family here and very much a character, but we would love to help his condition and release him. When he was brought in he seemed pretty cheesed off with life, but now he's a normal hedgehog in everything but appearance. I don't think he realises he hasn't got any spines."

Spud is one of more than 500 hedgehogs currently receiving treatment at the animal hospital, which also cares for badgers, foxes and injured birds.
