A West Virginia man is laying claim to one of the world's smallest chicken eggs. Whether it's a record remains to be seen.
The Reverand Donnie Russell said he found the egg last month on his farm.
It's 2.1 centimetres long, or a bit bigger than a penny, and weighs 3.46 grams - a little more than one-tenth of an ounce.
'It's really something. If you want to know the truth, I can't put it into words,' Mr Russell said.
Mr Russell, of Raleigh County, said his wife is an animal lover and she's collected cats, geese, ducks, chickens and other types of birds over the years.
Normally, the chicken eggs are donated to people from the Rock Creek Community Church, where Mr Russell is the pastor.
'Lo and behind, we went out and gathered these eggs. We had to do a double take. We both looked with our mouths open for about five minutes before we said a word. We said this has got to be a record.'
The chicken that he believes laid the egg is normal sized.
'When you see something like that, you wonder how in the world did that ever happen?' Mr Russell said. 'We're still taking it in.'
The state Department of Agriculture has certified the egg's size.
Guinness World Records lists the smallest recorded chicken egg as 2.7 centimetres, although a man from Great Britain in May claimed earlier this year to having one that was 2 millimetres smaller.
Mr Russell said he's still undecided whether to make an application with Guinness. He does plan to preserve the egg, which he's named the John Spencer Russell egg in honour of his two grandsons - John Kenny Russell and Spencer Matthew Russell.
State Agriculture Commissioner Gus Douglass said: 'West Virginia's hills are full of surprises - we have a little bit of everything, it seems. I'm very pleased that Rev Russell and others are keeping agriculture alive in the Mountain State, and that he takes obvious pride in being a West Virginia farmer.'

260.8kg tiger shark catch sets a new world record
BRETT Sinclair broke a world record when he hooked this massive 260.8kg tiger shark during a game fishing competition near Port Hedland in WA's north.
Amazingly, he caught it on just 6kg fishing line, which is usually used to catch snapper and salmon. He beat the world's previous best catch on a 6kg line by more than 100kg.
The 27-year-old from Sydney was participating in the Dampier Classic when he landed the beast from a rented boat just after midnight on August 1.
It took more than three hours to reel the giant shark in.
"We had already caught a small tiger shark an hour or two before," Mr Sinclair said.
"When this one took the bait I thought it would be about the same size. I actually asked the other lads if they wanted to grab the rod and have a go but luckily they said no."
Mr Sinclair, an industrial chemist, was on the boat with his cousin and the boat's captain.
When the shark started to run we had to drop the anchor and go after it. It took hours for the shark to tire."

Brit claims new snake world record
Mr Jones' record attempt began in South Africa on 1 May and it will certainly fall into the 'do not try this at home' category.
David, 44 and from Crawley, has spent the last four months in a 5x4 metre room with 40 dangerous snakes.
Amongst the snakes in the room there are two black mambas, two green mambas, three snouted cobras and 27 puff adders, all of which are deadly to humans.
David has already broken the previous record of 113 days, but decided to stay in the room to take the new record up to four months.
As he started his record attempt David wrote: "When I stepped into the room on Saturday 1st May as you can imagine I was fairly nervous, the room felt much smaller now there were 40 venomous snakes in there. As I entered the room there is a branch above my head and sitting on that branch was 3 boomslang (sic) and a Green mamba."
A boomslang is a small venomous snake native to sub-Saharan Africa, while National Geographic say the black mamba is widely considered the world's deadliest snake.
David has not left the room in the last four months, so he has slept, eaten and even been to the toilet while his slippery roommates have looked on.
Before setting off on his record attempt, David told the BBC that there were many things concerning him about the record attempt, he said: "I'm not terrified - concerned, yes, for a lot of reasons. Not just the fact they are venomous snakes and there is a very real possibility of ending up in hospital, I'm also leaving a wife, I'm leaving a son and I'm leaving my family for four and a half months."
In 2009 a similar attempt at the record was made, but Natie Swart failed as he was bitten three times by a puff adder and suffered permanent leg damage; in fact he narrowly avoided having his leg amputated.
David's record attempt is yet another crazy world record to have fallen recently, click through the images below for a look at some of the other recent world record attempts.
