Deadly crayfish close in on rare pearl mussels

THEY have dwelt in Scotland’s waterways since the last Ice Age and were, according to Roman historians, the reason why Julius Caesar invaded Britain.
But the freshwater pearl mussel, already critically endangered, is facing a potentially terminal threat from another foreign invader.
American signal crayfish released into the wild have spread through the nation’s rivers in recent decades and now directly threaten the remaining colonies of the rare molluscs.
Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH), the government’s countryside protection agency, says crayfish are now just 20 miles away from a prime colony of freshwater pearl mussels in the Tay.
Anglers are being encouraged to protect the mussel beds from being destroyed. The Tay Fisheries Board is urging fishermen and other river users to avoid anything which could help spread the crayfish, such as eggs which have attached to fishing gear. They also stress the need to kill any adult crayfish found and never return them to the water.
The warning follows SNH-supervised experiments which have demonstrated that crayfish will attack colonies when they eventually invade mussel habitat.
Scottish Natural Heritage’s freshwater adviser, Dr Colin Bean, said they now had evidence of a “mortal” threat to the mussel beds.
“Upstream in the River Earn, there are crayfish around Comrie,” he said. “You get mussels as far down as Perth. They haven’t clashed yet on the Tay, but there is a threat given how fast they spread. It’s not far away.”
Scotland is home to half the world’s population of freshwater pearl mussels. They have been harvested close to extinction on the off-chance they might contain a pearl, and are sensitive to pollution.
The precise location of surviving colonies is publicised as little as possible to give the mussel numbers a chance to recover.
But Bean said that after identifying the risk, SNH wanted to look into what would happen when the creatures met.
He said: “We put the two of them in tanks, looking at the behaviour of the crayfish.

New invasive crayfish even more damaging

Environment Agency tracks alien invaders
January 2012. The Environment Agency is using radio transmitters to locate and track a ferocious predator invading English waterways. The virile crayfish, a highly aggressive non-native crayfish, is slowly invading waterways in East London. This unwanted visitor preys on native wildlife and spreads crayfish plague, a disease deadly to native white clawed crayfish.

First found in 2004
The Environment Agency is tracking the progress of virile crayfish by installing small radio-transmitters on the backs of these environmental trouble-makers. Originally from North America, their spread is unabated by cold weather. They were first found on the River Lee near Enfield in 2004 and have since colonised over 17 kilometres of the river and connected waterways, spreading into Hertfordshire. 


Preliminary results show that virile crayfish are moving upstream at a rate of 500 metres per month, substantially faster than their non-native cousin, the signal crayfish.

The UK's only native crayfish, the white clawed crayfish, was wiped out along the River Lee following the invasion of the signal crayfish in the 1980s and the associated spread of crayfish plague. The Environment Agency's work on the River Lee in Cheshunt will give a better understanding of the movement and lifecycle of the signal and virile crayfish. By better understanding the spread of virile crayfish, this work will contribute to efforts to safeguard native white clawed crayfish elsewhere in the country. 

Adam Ellis, Environmental Monitoring Officer at the Environment Agency said: "Whilst rivers in England and Wales are cleaner than they have been for decades, there is still a lot to be done in order to return them to full health. This includes the control of invasive species like virile crayfish.

Trust turns to eels in war against US crayfish

THE battle against invading American signal crayfish is being stepped up in one of Scotland's biggest lochs.
 
Millions of crayfish have infested picturesque Loch Ken, north of Castle Douglas in Dumfries and Galloway, and efforts to control their numbers have failed.

Now thousands of European eels, which eat crayfish, are being introduced into a river that runs into the loch in the hope that they will reduce the population.

Fishing in the loch, the biggest in the south of Scotland, has been badly hit by the infestation of the American crayfish, costing the region tens of thousands of pounds.

The Galloway Fisheries Trust, which is behind the project to introduce the baby eels, believes that once they are fully grown the eels will leave the River Dee for the loch, where they are expected to devour large numbers of crayfish.

Rownan Armstrong, a biologist with the Galloway Fisheries Trust, said: "The eels are still young and it will take time for them to grow."

The loch and the River Dee used to be home to a healthy population of the eels, but following the construction of Tongland Dam, near Kirkcudbright, the numbers fell dramatically.

But now eels are being trapped below the dam and are being transported above it and placed in small burns in the lower river.

A Scottish Government-backed cull of the invading crayfish resulted in the deaths of two million two years ago, but it has made little impression on the fast-growing American species, which was introduced to the United Kingdom 20 years ago.

New crayfish species ID'd in W.Va.

West Liberty scientist finds creature in Greenbrier waters

Relatively slender claws and body, as well as differences in the plate-like projection between its eyes, differentiate the Greenbrier crayfish from its cousin, the Big Water crayfish. The Greenbrier species is found only in the Greenbrier River and its headwaters.
 
"We found that you start seeing it around Anthony," Loughman said. "It becomes more and more common as you head upriver."

The new species is pretty good-sized. It averages 3 to 3 1/2 inches from the tip of its tail to the tip of its nose, and 5 to 6 inches from the tip of its tail to the tips of its claws.

Twenty-three crayfish species live within West Virginia's borders. Only three are completely endemic -- the Elk River crayfish, the Greenbrier Cave crayfish and now the Greenbrier crayfish. Loughman said the new species is abundant through its range, but added that the range isn't very large.

"Because of the limited range, it was suggested that the species be considered 'threatened' within the state," he said. "The DNR hasn't yet decided whether to put it on the protected list. If [DNR officials] consider it worthy of federal protection, they'll make that recommendation to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service."

Loughman considers the new species' population to be stable.

"If some sort of environmental problem arose in the headwaters of the Greenbrier, the Greenbrier crayfish would be in trouble," he said. "Fortunately, most of the river's upper headwaters lie within the Monongahela National Forest and are pretty well protected."


The new crayfish's natural predators include smallmouth bass, rock bass, raccoons and the giant salamanders known as "hellbenders." Loughman and his associates also have discovered that it and other crayfish species play an important role in any river's ecosystem.

"If anyone asks, 'Why should I care about a crawdad?' they should consider this," Loughman said. "Crayfish are always digging. They stay in a burrow for two to three weeks, then leave. The holes they leave behind become hiding places for other critters, including fish. Young smallmouth bass and channel catfish are heavily dependent on crayfish holes."

Loughman said his discovery of the new crayfish species is significant for two reasons.

"One, it's a species found only in West Virginia," he said, "and two, it increases the state's biological diversity by one organism."

Researchers discover giant crayfish species right under their noses

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. —Two aquatic biologists have proven that you don't have to travel to exotic locales to search for unusual new species. They discovered a distinctive species of crayfish in Tennessee and Alabama that is at least twice the size of its competitors. Its closest genetic relative, once thought to be the only species in its genus and discovered in 1884 about 130 miles away in Kentucky, can grow almost as big as a lobster.

The researchers found their first specimen under one of the biggest rocks in the deepest part of a creek that has been a (literal) stomping ground for aquatic biologists for at least half a century. The new species is described in a paper in the Proceedings of the Biological Society of Washington.

The new crayfish belongs to the genus Barbicambarus, which in addition to being big is very distinctive. Most notably, Barbicambarus have unusual "bearded" antennae; the antennae are covered with a luxurious fringe of tiny, hair-like bristles, called setae, which enhance their sensory function.

"This isn't a crayfish that someone would have picked up and just said, 'Oh, it's another crayfish,' and put it back," said University of Illinois aquatic biologist Chris Taylor, the curator of crustaceans at the Illinois Natural History Survey and a co-discoverer of the new species with Eastern Kentucky University biological sciences professor Guenter Schuster. "If you were an aquatic biologist and you had seen this thing, because of the size and the setae on the antennae, you would have recognized it as something really, really different and you would have saved it."

Schuster first learned of the crayfish in 2009 when a colleague forwarded photos from a man who had seen the animal in Shoal Creek, a stream in southern Tennessee that ultimately drains into the Tennessee River. Schuster immediately recognized it as a member of the genus Barbicambarus, and sent the photos to Taylor, his longtime collaborator.

Both men suspected that this was a wayward member of the originally discovered species, Barbicambarus cornutus. B. cornutus had never been seen that far south, but the researchers knew that crayfish have been moved great distances in the bait buckets of itinerant fishermen or by those interested in commercially rearing crayfishes.

"I was leaning to the easiest explanation," Taylor said.

"Me too," said Schuster. "That's been going on for 50 years in the U.S., moving species around, so it would not be a surprise if that was the case."

The researchers contacted a colleague in Tennessee, who told them that a scientist with the Tennessee Valley Authority, Jeffrey Simmons, had collected a crayfish that looked like the one in the photo – "just a couple of miles from where the original photograph we had gotten was taken," Schuster said.

That was enough to spur a hastily organized field trip to Shoal Creek.

With two other biologists, Taylor and Schuster scoured the creek for more specimens. After two hours of turning over boulders and kicking up the sediment to flush the crayfish into their seine, the researchers had found nothing out of the ordinary.

"We had worked so hard and long that we were ready to give up and find another site," Schuster said. "And we saw this big flat boulder underneath a bridge and so we said, 'OK. Let's flip this rock, just for the heck of it; this will be our last one.' And sure enough, that's where we got the first specimen." It was a big male, about twice the size of any other crayfish they had seen that day. And it had the characteristic bearded setae.

The researchers found only two specimens that day, a very small haul for nearly three hours of work. The second specimen, a female, was under a large, flat boulder that was too big for one man to lift alone in the current.

In the lab, Schuster quickly realized that the physical characteristics of the new crayfish differed in significant ways from those of B. cornutus. Taylor took tissue samples and compared the specimens' DNA to that of B. cornutus.

"And the DNA said just what the morphology said: This thing is pretty different," Taylor said.

And rare. The researchers made several more trips to the area before they were able to collect enough specimens to confirm what they already suspected: The giant crayfish of Shoal Creek was a new species.

They named it Barbicambarus simmonsi, in honor of the TVA scientist who had collected the first specimen.
Later trips to the region confirmed that B. simmonsi was also present in the southern reaches of Shoal Creek, just north of where it drains into the Tennessee River in northwest Alabama.

Most people are shocked to learn that there are about 600 species of crayfish in the world, Taylor said, with more than half of those occurring north of Mexico. Alabama and Tennessee are hotspots of crayfish diversity, he said.

The discovery of a new species of crayfish in itself is not unusual, the researchers said. About two new species of crayfish are found every year in the U.S. But the discovery of a large, distinctive new species in a region that had been studied for decades is quite astounding, they said.

"We looked at museum collections around the country," Taylor said. "There were no specimens in there masquerading under a different species name. No one had found this thing and called it B. cornutus. This thing had not been seen by scientific eyes until last year."

The fact that a distinct species was overlooked for so long indicates that studies of species diversity in the U.S. are not getting adequate resources, Schuster said.

"We spend millions of dollars every year on federal grants to send biologists to the Amazon, to Southeast Asia – all over the world looking for and studying the biodiversity of those regions," Schuster said. "But the irony is that there's very little money that is actually spent in our own country to do the same thing. And there are still lots of areas right here in the U.S. that need to be explored."

Bid to save crayfish in Wimborne river

THREATENED white-clawed crayfish are being helped to make a comeback in Wimborne’s River Allen.

River restoration is providing exactly the right habitat for Britain’s native crayfish, with clean water and gravel as well as woody debris or large stones for shelter.

The freshwater crustacean is under threat from the more aggressive, disease carrying American signal crayfish. Introduced into the UK only 20-years-ago, it has wiped out almost 95 per cent of the native species.

And fears have been raised that the white-clawed crayfish faces extinction from UK waters in 30-years unless new populations can be created in safe waters.

A new wildlife partnership with Bournemouth and West Hants Water is funding Dorset Wildlife Trust’s River Allen restoration scheme.

It continues the work that fishing clubs and local farmers have been doing to maintain the river and encourage wildlife such as wading birds back to the area.

“The River Allen is one of the best habitats in Dorset for our native crayfish,” said Sarah Williams, conservation officer at Dorset Wildlife Trust.

“With only four rivers in the whole county where they live, the scheme is very important in protecting them. We are very grateful to Bournemouth and West Hampshire Water for their support on this latest project, which will help all sorts of wildlife to thrive,” she said.

Roger Harrington, technical director of the water company, which is a long-term supporter of the trust, said they were delighted to be helping improve the habitat of the river.

“This is an important local chalk stream which runs through the centre of Wimborne. It follows on from other work we have supported over the years aimed at ensuring its habitats and wildlife flourish,” he said.
