A leading fisheries consultant has warned that killing more seals and cormorants is the only way to reverse the trend of ever diminishing fish stocks in the Stockholm archipelago.
Sverker Lovén, chairman of Fiskefrämjandet, a fish-promotion association, has carried out a detailed investigation into the disappearance of several breeds of fish in the waters outside the capital, most noticeably perch and pike.
He has come to the conclusion that if something is not done about the number of seals preying on the fish, there is a good chance they will eventually die out altogether.
”All indications suggest that seals and cormorants are the cause of the collapse of fish stocks. Perch and pike have completely disappeared from some parts of the archipelago,” said Loven to Metro newspaper.
Another fish under threat is the trout.
”The recapture of trout we have tagged, has decreased by around 90 percent in the past ten years and the stock of adult trout as a whole has decreased to the same extent,” he added.
Despite the fact that this could signal overfishing, the number of people fishing in the archipelago over the same period has declined sharply.
By killing more seals, a major problem could therefore be avoided in years to come, argues Lovén.
Seals consume some 25-50 tonnes of fish on a daily basis, while cormorants devour some 15-18 tonnes, meaning that, at the current rate, it is impossible for fish stocks to replenish.

Climate change threatens Arctic cod
Higher sea water temperatures have led to northwards migration of marine species that can create problems for the Arctic cod and other fish stocks in the Barents Sea, scientists believe.
In course of the last 13 years, about 300 southern species have been found in the western part of the Barents Sea or outside Svalbard, a new report from the Norwegian Directorate for Nature Management reads.
In the report scientist Torleiv Brattegard shows that more than 100 new species from more temperate waters have been established in Norwegian waters from 1997 until today. At least two thirds of these have entered our seas from Scotland and Shetland, and the rest have arrived from the coasts of Sweden and Denmark.
Brattegard says to NRK that higher temperatures are the only possible cause for the establishment of southern species in the Barents Sea:
- The fact that they are moving northwards is connected with a rise in the sea water temperature. There is no other explanation that we know of, he says.
Of the about 1600 benthic marine species that were defined as southern species in Norway in 1997, having their northern distribution limit somewhere on the Norwegian coast, 565 species have moved further north along the coast, on average 750-1000 kilometers during the period from 1997 - 2010
- It is frightening that the little rise in temperature that has been going on in the last years can make such a big difference, says senior adviser Ingrid Bysveen at the Norwegian Directorate for Nature Management. - When new species enter the food chain, it changes the conditions for competition for all the fish and animals already in the area, she adds.
- We don’t know the consequences of this yet, but we believe that it will become tougher for the cod and other fish stocks, Bysveen says. The higher sea water temperature itself can also mean that the habitats and spawning grounds for fish will move further north.

Swiss fish of the year in deep waters
Just 12 months after being named Fish of the Year 2010, the souffia is even more threatened than originally thought.
As the Swiss Fishing Association announced on Thursday, the souffia – also known as the Western Vairone – has already disappeared from some places.
The association chose the small, thin fish during the Year of Biodiversity to highlight its struggle for survival and the depletion of fish stocks.
The souffia (telestes souffia) is a ray-finned species mainly found in central and mediterranean European countries. To a lesser extent it also occurs in eastern Europe. Measuring 12-18 centimetres, it has distinctive yellowish lines down its sides and yellow-orange fins.
This year the Swiss Fishing Association engaged fishers and cantonal authorities to take a closer look at the souffia, a species that many were quite unfamiliar with.
They found hardly any souffia in the central plateau, and in the western midlands there were only small stocks. Stocks in the Jura region were reported to be stable.
Canton Ticino was the only part of Switzerland boasting a solid population of the slender fish.
According to the association, a loss of habitat is to blame for the decline of the souffia. It depends on rivers and streams with clean water – preferably with gravel in which it lays its eggs between March and May.
The fishing association has called for a restoration of Swiss waters to help the souffia escape extinction.
