Humpback Whale killed in shark nets off Durban

Shark net mortality being reduced by new measures
October 2011. On Monday 10 October 2011 a male humpback whale calf measuring 7.9m washed up on the beach at Umhlanga Rocks, KwaZulu-Natal. From the presence of netting material around the calf it was apparent that it had become entangled in one of the protective shark nets set off this popular bathing beach to reduce the risk of shark attack.

The KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board (KZNSB) investigates every report of a whale that may be in distress and it has a 100% record of releasing entangled animals found alive. Three specialised and well equipped whale release teams carry out the hazardous task. Unfortunately in this particular case the whale calf was not seen at the time it encountered the nets and hence no release was possible. It is suspected that the entanglement occurred during the hours of darkness because the Umhlanga beach is overlooked by numerous high-rise buildings and a daytime entanglement would have been observed.

Measures to reduce entanglement in shark nets
The KZNSB has implemented various measures that reduce the risk of entanglement of whales and other marine animals that pose no threat to bathers. These measures included:
  • The reduction in the total length of netting on the KZN coast from 45 km to 23 km.
  • Some nets have been replaced with drumlines, more selective shark fishing devices that catch very few non-shark animals. It is hoped that further replacement will occur.
  • Whakle alarms have been attached to a number of the shark nets to alert the animals to their presence and hopefully reduce the risk of entanglement.
  • KZNSB lifts the nets during the annual sardine run in June and July to reduce catches of predators accompanying the sardine shoals. Humpback whales are not known to predate on sardines on the KZN coast but the sardine run coincides with the northward migration of the whales.

New, Higher Estimates of Endangered Humpback Whales in the North Pacific

ScienceDaily (Oct. 18, 2011) — Scientists have increased the estimate on the number of humpback whales in the North Pacific Ocean in a paper published in the journal Marine Mammal Science. The increase follows a refined statistical analysis of data compiled in 2008 from the largest whale survey ever undertaken to assess humpback whale populations throughout the North Pacific.

The number of North Pacific Humpback Whales in the 2008 study known as the Structure of Populations, Levels of Abundance and Status of Humpbacks, or SPLASH, was estimated at just under 20,000 based on a preliminary look at the data. This new research indicates the population to be over 21,000 and possibly even higher -- a significant improvement to the scant 1400 humpback whales estimated in the North Pacific Ocean at the end of commercial whaling in 1966.

"These improved numbers are encouraging, especially after we have reduced most of the biases inherent in any statistical model," said Jay Barlow, NOAAs Fisheries Service marine mammal biologist at the Southwest Fisheries Science Center in La Jolla, Calif. "We feel the numbers may even be larger since there have been across-the-board increases in known population areas and unknown areas have probably seen the same increases."

The SPLASH research was a three-year project begun in 2004 involving NOAA scientists and hundreds of other researchers from the United States, Japan, Russia, Mexico, Canada, the Philippines, Costa Rica, Panama, Nicaragua and Guatemala and was the first systematic survey ever attempted to determine the humpback whales' overall population, structure, and genetic makeup in the North Pacific.

Researchers were able to quantify the number of humpback whales by photographing and cataloguing over 18,000 pictures of the animals' tail, or fluke because the pigmentation patterns on the fluke act like a fingerprint and are unique to each animal. Scientists determined population numbers by comparing photographs taken in northern feeding grounds (around the Pacific Rim from California to Kamchatka) compared with matches of the same animals in the warm tropical waters of southern breeding areas as far as 3000 miles away.

"This latest revision to the study provides an accurate estimate for humpback whales in an entire ocean that could not have been possible without researchers working together to pool data," said John Calambokidis, senior research biologist and co-founder of Cascadia Research. "While populations of some other whale species remain very low this shows that humpback whales are among those that have recovered strongly from whaling."

Australia stranded baby whale towed back into the sea

Rescuers on Australia's Gold Coast have returned a baby humpback whale to the sea after it was found stranded on a beach in the early hours of Monday.


Marine scientists hope that it will be reunited with its mother if she's still in the area.

Happy Ending To Tale Of Humpback Whale

A group of whale watchers in the Gulf of California have become conservation heroes.


The three men rescued a humpback whale which had become entangled in a discarded fishing net.


When they first saw the creature she was floating motionless on the surface and they feared she was dead.

But she then made a loud, groaning-like sound and when they got closer it became clear what was wrong.


They immediately set about freeing the whale - which repaid their efforts in the most spectacular fashion.

1,607 whales sighted

MAALAEA - Volunteers and researchers on Maui tallied 1,607 sightings of humpback whales Saturday, a 33 percent increase from last year, the Pacific Whale Foundation reported.

Last year's total was 1,208 humpbacks. There were 12 counting stations in the Great Maui Whale Count.

Greg Kaufman, founder and president of PWF, which organized the count, said the sighting conditions were "fantastic," with calm seas and light winds.

"Because we have conducted the count systematically at the same time each year, it provides a valuable look at Hawaii's winter whale population. In general, we are seeing evidence of a growing number of whale sightings in recent years," Kaufman said in a news release.

He said the increase in sightings correlates to research that shows the humpback whale population in the North Pacific increasing at a rate of 7 percent or 8 percent each year.

An estimated 20,000 humpback whales live in the North Pacific, and about 60 percent of that population is believed to come to Hawaii each year to mate, give birth and care for their young, a release said.

The counting stations were positioned along Maui's south and western shores, in an area extending from Makena to Kapalua. There also was a station at Hookipa Beach Park on Maui's north shore.

Last year's count took place a week later than usual because of a tsunami warning on the originally scheduled day. In 2009, 1,010 whale sightings were recorded. In 2008, 1,726 were tallied on a day with ideal conditions such as Saturday's.

Of Saturday's sightings, 154 were calves, compared to 149 sighted last year.

Puu Olai in Makena recorded the most whale sightings with 311 during the counting window, which was open from 8:30 to 11:55 a.m.

The count was conducted by 100 volunteers who worked alongside Pacific Whale Foundation researchers and staff and was done along lookout posts from the shorelines.

The count is part of the Maui Whale Festival, a series of whale-related events taking place from November through mid-May.

The first confirmed sighting of a humpback whale in Irish waters in 2011 has taken place.

The humpback, which is one of the largest creatures on the planet, has been sighted on two occasions this week off the southeast coast.

The Irish Whale and Dolphin Group has confirmed that the whale had not been recorded in Irish waters before, and it is different to the animal which was spotted several times last year off the Co Wexford coast.

This latest sighting brings the number of humpbacks documented here to 13, with many of these re-sighted on an annual basis.

Humpbacks were close to global extinction because of commercial whaling, but the IWDG says there is now a 'slow but steady' recovery in numbers.

Humpback travels from Brazil to Madagascar – Breaks whale distance record

October 2010. When Norwegian tourist Freddy Johansen snapped a photograph of a diving humpback whale in Madagascar, he had no idea that his holiday snap would lead to an important scientific discovery. Researchers from College of the Atlantic's Allied Whale saw the image on the internet and found that the same whale had also been photographed in the waters off Brazil. Not only did this journey take the whale a quarter of the way around the globe - further than that recorded by any mammal, ever - the whale moved between two different breeding groups, a rare occurrence for this species. This finding has implications for understanding and managing whale populations worldwide say College of the Atlantic (COA) scientists.


Remarkable distance and destination
According to Peter Stevick, an Allied Whale research associate, this whale's journey is remarkable for both its distance and its destination. It is nearly twice as far as the passage typically made by humpbacks in their annual north-south migration between winter breeding grounds in warm tropical waters and the nutrient-rich colder waters where they feed in summer. This whale has travelled across the Atlantic Ocean, around Africa and well into the Indian Ocean. Humpback whales seldom move between breeding areas, so the breeding groups or stocks are thought to be isolated from one another. Even more unusual, this whale is a female. Usually it is the males who are the long-distance travellers.

Says Stevick, a COA alumnus, "While the journey of this one whale is extreme, her example shows us that we should pay attention; whales may not always do what we expect, or remain in tidy groups. The picture of their behaviour is messier, and their east-west movement could well be more important than we have previously recognized. Because of that, our management focus needs to be more expansive."


New understanding
Humpback whales were hunted to exceedingly low numbers in past centuries, and those in the Southern Hemisphere were particularly devastated. Some 200,000 were killed before hunting was outlawed in the 1960s. While humpbacks have recovered well in some places, they remain scarce in others. Discovering how they move between regions helps scientists understand the way in which their populations respond both to the end of hunting and to ongoing human impacts such as ship strikes or fishing gear entanglements.

Distinct markings
The connection between the two distant sightings of this wandering female was made possible thanks to pioneering work in the 1970s by researchers and students at COA, proving that the humpback whales have distinctive tail markings. Like human fingerprints, these markings distinguish individual animals. This revolutionary discovery enables scientists to follow individual whales with a camera and telephoto lens.

Whale ID catalogue
Allied Whale, COA's marine mammal research program, has been curating extensive photographic catalogues of humpback whales for more than 30 years, projects that depend upon international collaboration and the willingness of scientists and individuals to share data. The catalogues consist of photographs from breeding and feeding areas throughout the humpback's range in both northern and southern hemispheres, providing a unique clearinghouse for scientific analysis of humpback movements.

First seen off Brazil

This whale was first identified by scientist Mariana C. Neves who studies whales off Brazil through the Instituto Balaie Jubarte. Johansen, who took the matching photograph just over two years later, represents the hundreds of tourists, tour guides, and other non-scientists who have contributed photographs to the effort. Other non-specialists, including students and volunteers, assist scientists in matching diverse images. The two sightings of this whale were matched by long-time Allied Whale associate and volunteer Gale McCullough, an avid citizen scientist in Hancock, Maine.

Founded in 1969, College of the Atlantic is a small college of some 345 students on the coast of Maine fostering interdisciplinary approaches to complex environmental and social problems. The academic program encourages hands-on, experiential learning and asks students to view the world as an interactive whole by bringing together traditional disciplines through the unifying perspective of human ecology.

Bid to save whale off Shetland 'could take weeks'

Animal welfare experts have said it could take weeks to free a humpback whale which has been caught up in creel ropes off Shetland.


The 25ft-long creature was spotted tangled in ropes attached to buoys off the shore near Vidlin, on the east of the islands.

Bad weather has forced Scottish Natural Heritage and the Scottish SPCA to postpone a rescue operation.

The rescuers are now waiting for calm seas.

They would then attempt to bring a boat alongside the whale and cut the ropes.

The rescuers have been in touch with experts in the United States who said the whale could survive for two or three weeks.

In 2000, a 7ft leatherback turtle was rescued after it became entangled in creel ropes off Shetland.
