Japan, Russia see chance to clone mammoth

Scientists from Japan and Russia believe it may be possible to clone a mammoth after finding well-preserved bone marrow in a thigh bone recovered from permafrost soil in Siberia, a report said Saturday.

Teams from the Sakha Republic's mammoth museum and Japan's Kinki University will launch fully-fledged joint research next year aiming to recreate the giant mammal, Japan's Kyodo News reported from Yakutsk, Russia.

By replacing the nuclei of egg cells from an elephant with those taken from the mammoth's marrow cells, embryos with mammoth DNA can be produced, Kyodo said, citing the researchers.

The scientists will then plant the embryos into elephant wombs for delivery, as the two species are close relatives, the report said.

Securing nuclei with an undamaged gene is essential for the nucleus transplantation technique, it said.
For scientists involved in the research since the late 1990s, finding nuclei with undamaged mammoth genes has been a challenge. Mammoths became extinct about 10,000 years ago.

But the discovery in August of the well-preserved thigh bone in Siberia has increased the chances of a successful cloning.

Global warming has thawed ground in eastern Russia that is usually almost permanently frozen, leading to the discoveries of a number of frozen mammoths, the report said.

The woolly mammoth may surprisingly have regularly interbred with a completely different and much larger elephant species, researchers now find.

Woolly mammoths (Mammuthus primigenius) roamed the planet for more than a million years, ranging from Europe to Asia to North America. Nearly all of these giants vanished from Siberia by about 10,000 years ago, although dwarf mammoths survived on Wrangel Island in the Arctic Ocean until 3,700 years ago.

Although woolly mammoths lived in the cold of the tundra, the Columbian mammoth (Mammuthus columbi) preferred the more temperate regions of southern and central North America. The Columbians were much larger than woollies, with Columbian males reaching one-and-a-half to two times that of woolly males.


"We are talking about two very physically different species here," said researcher Hendrik Poinar, an evolutionary geneticist at McMaster University in Hamilton, Canada. "You have roughly 1 million years of separation between the two, with the Columbian mammoth likely derived from an early migration into North America approximately 1.5 million years ago, and their woolly counterparts emigrating to North America some 400,000 years ago."

Poinar and his colleagues investigated the evolution of Columbian mammoths by analyzing DNA retrieved from the tusks, bone and teeth of two approximately 11,000-year-old fossil specimens, one found in the Huntington Reservoir in Utah and the other found near Rawlins, Wyo. The researchers concentrated on the genomes of the mitochondria, the "powerhouses" of the cells, which have their own unique DNA and are inherited from the mother.

Surprisingly, they discovered the mitochondrial genome of the Columbian mammoth was nearly indiscernible from that of its northern woolly counterparts. [Album: 25 Amazing Ancient Beasts]

"At first I thought, 'Oh crap, there's contamination of some sort,'" Poinar said.

However, any minor contamination they found could not explain the extensive genetic evidence they uncovered, and they replicated their results in an independent lab. "I think we were very lucky," Poinar told LiveScience.

"We think we may be looking at a genetic hybrid," said researcher Jacob Enk, a graduate student in the McMaster Ancient DNA Center.

When glacial times got nasty, woollies likely moved to more pleasant conditions southward, where they came into contact with the Columbian mammoths.

"Living African elephant species hybridize where their ranges overlap, with the bigger species out-competing the smaller for mates," Enk added. The offspring are perfectly fertile, Poinar added.

Since woollies and Columbians overlapped in time and space, it is not unlikely that they interbred in much the same manner.

"It reminds me a bit of high-school days — the larger males are more successful at meeting women across the dance floor than the rest of us," Poinar said.

These findings could explain why some mammoth fossils had features intermediate between woollies and Columbians, although the genomes of both species should be sequenced to tell for sure. The researchers also want to look at Columbian mammoth specimens from farther south where no woollies ever ventured, to get an idea of what nonhybrid samples might look like.

The scientists detailed their findings online May 31 in the journal Genome Biology.

The long-extinct woolly mammoth could be brought back to life within four years after a breakthrough in cloning technology by Japanese scientists.

Researchers have tried unsuccessfully in the past to recover nuclei in cells from the skin and muscle tissue of mammoths found frozen in permafrost, The (London) Daily Telegraph reported late Thursday.

The attempts failed because the cells were too damaged by the extreme cold.

However, a technique pioneered by Dr. Teruhiko Wakayama of the Riken Centre for Developmental Biology has succeeded in cloning a mouse from the cells of another, which had been frozen for 16 years.

Akira Iritani, a professor at Kyoto University, said the same technique could be used to resurrect the woolly mammoth, which died out about 5,000 years ago.

"Now the technical problems have been overcome, all we need is a good sample of soft tissue from a frozen mammoth," he said.

The woolly mammoth would be conceived by inserting the nuclei into the egg cells of an African elephant, which will act as a surrogate mother.

Iritani said the first cloned woolly mammoth could be born in about four years.

Giant woolly mammoths died out because they ran out of grass - not because they were hunted to extinction, according to scientists.

Until now, it was thought the huge relatives of modern elephants had been harried and hunted into oblivion by early man.

Instead, global warming 21,000 years ago left the massive mammals with nothing to eat, a team of scientists from Durham University claimed.

As the planet heated up and the weather got wetter, forests spread out, leaving large herbivores like mammoths with less to eat and causing knock-on effects for the rest of the food chain, the scientists found.

The findings come from a new investigation into the mammoths' last days, led by Durham University's School of Biological and Biomedical Sciences.

Together with colleagues from the Natural History Museum, Bristol University and Lund University in Sweden, the scientists simulated the effect of global warming on climate and vegetation at the end of the last ice age.

Standing three metres tall, mammoths had thick hair to cope with the cold.

But nothing could help them with a lack of food, the new research suggested, coming to the conclusion it was the growth of trees that was their undoing.

"It is food for thought in these times of global warming and human-induced habitat change," said team leader Professor Brian Huntley.

"Mammoths had roamed and munched their way across many parts of Europe, including the UK," said Professor Huntley.

"We believe that the loss of food supplies from productive grasslands was the major contributing factor to the extinction of these mega-mammals."

The team warned that the plight of mammoths after the ice age could happen again - this time to elephants and rhinoceroses, if habitats change because of modern global warming.

"This is a model for what may happen as a result of rapid climate change over the next century linked to human activity," the professor added.

Woolly mammoth hunters helped change climate

ANCHORAGE Alaska (Reuters) - Ancient hunters who stalked the world's last woolly mammoths likely helped warm the Earth's far northern latitudes thousands of years before humans began burning fossil fuels, according to a study of prehistoric climate change.

The demise of the leaf-chomping woolly mammoths contributed to a proliferation of dwarf birch trees in and around the Arctic, darkening a largely barren, reflective landscape and accelerating a rise in temperatures across the polar north, researchers at the Carnegie Institution for Science concluded.

The northward march of vegetation affected the climate because of the "albedo effect," in which replacement of white snow and ice with darker land surfaces absorbs more sunlight and creates a self-repeating warming cycle, the study found.

The end of the last Ice Age, marked by a worldwide rise in temperatures and the dramatic retreat of glaciers that once covered much of the Northern Hemisphere, was already under way when the extinction of woolly mammoths began.

But the latest findings, scheduled to be published in the Geophysical Research Letters journal, suggest human activity played a role in altering Earth's climate long before mankind began burning coal and oil for energy, though the effects of prehistoric hunting were minute by comparison.

FIRST HUMAN IMPACT ON CLIMATE

If mammoth hunters helped hasten Arctic warming, that would potentially be the first such human impact on climate, preceding that caused by ancient farmers, Chris Field, director of the Carnegie Institution's Department of Global Ecology and a co-author of the study, said on Tuesday.

With the advent of agriculture about 7,000 years ago at more southern latitudes, humans are believed to have modified the climate through deforestation and cultivation of new plants, he said.

The earlier climate consequences of declining mammoth populations were extremely subtle.

The flourishing of plant life as the voracious, vegetarian beasts were disappearing about 15,000 years ago helped warm the Arctic and boreal regions in what is now Siberia and North America by 0.2 degrees Celsius over a period of several centuries, though certain spots saw a temperature rise of up to 1 degree Celsius, the study found.

Ancient human-caused warming was tiny compared to modern-day warming, in which the Earth's temperature has risen about 0.74 degrees Celsius (1.33 degrees F) since the start of the 20th century, with temperatures rising at least twice as fast in the Arctic, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

The research attributes about a fourth of the Arctic's vegetation-driven warming to the decline of the woolly mammoth. If human hunters helped kill off the large mammals, they bear some responsibility for warming the climate, the scientists concluded.

"We're not saying this was a big effect," Field said. "The point of the paper isn't that this is a big effect. But it's a human effect."

The study analyzed pollen records in sediments of lakes in Alaska, Siberia and Canada's Yukon Territory. Through those records, scientists were able to reconstruct forest growth in what was once woolly mammoth habitat.

The scientists also analyzed behaviour of African elephants, the modern analogue to the woolly mammoth, which knock down trees as they dine on the leaves that they prefer to less-nutritious grasses.

The Earth already was warming at the time when mammoths were disappearing, but there is evidence that dramatic growth of vegetation in the far North followed the large animals' demise rather than preceded it, Field said.

"What we tried to do was say how much of the tree increase was due to the extinction of mammoths," he said.

It was not possible, however, to quantify how much of the extinction was due to human hunting, he said. Whether hunters ultimately pushed mammoths over the brink remains a subject of scientific debate, he said.

If humans did kill off the mammoths, "I'm sure they didn't have anything but a very local picture of what they were doing," Field said.

“Antifreeze Blood” Gave Woolly Mammoths a Survival Edge

It took more than being woolly for woolly mammoths to survive the wintry climates in which they lived. A new study in Nature Genetics suggests that the weighty mammals had hemoglobin in their blood that could keep oxygen moving even at low temperatures, giving them a kind of “antifreeze” blood:

For the mammoth, this meant that they could keep extremities cool and concentrate heat internally, minimizing heat loss. In addition, it meant that when food was scarce they could live on less of it since they didn’t need as much heat (or calories) to move the oxygen to the tissues [The Guardian].

Researchers figured this out through a lengthy process of analyzing 43,000-year-old mammoth remains unearthed in Siberia. But to understand the secrets of this huge creature, they had to enlist the help of a microorganism.

The mammoth DNA sequences were converted into RNA (a molecule similar to DNA which is central to the production of proteins) and inserted into E. coli bacteria. The bacteria faithfully manufactured the mammoth protein. “The resulting haemoglobin molecules are no different than ‘going back in time’ and taking a blood sample from a real mammoth,” said co-author Kevin Campbell, from the University of Manitoba in Canada [BBC News].

Reindeer, musk ox, and other creatures of cold areas have evolved similar means to survive in Arctic habitat. But what was most exciting for the researchers was finding that the mammoth “antifreeze” works with a totally different sequence of amino acids, creating a totally different solution to the same problem. Evolution had plenty of time to figure this one out: Scientists estimate that the creatures that would become woolly mammoths left Africa and split off from the other elephants between about 1.2 and 2 million years ago. While modern elephants evolved large ears and other means to stay cool in the African heat, the woolly mammoths evolved antifreeze blood.

The study was a long time coming, because building a time machine to reconstruct the DNA of long-gone animals took a global team.

Dr. Campbell needed mammoth DNA (from Siberia) and then experts (from Australia) to sequence that with the genetic information from an Asian elephant’s hemoglobin (from Canada) with additional help from scientists (in Japan) — truly an international team.

“No single lab in the world could do what we wanted to do. No one person has the expertise,” said Dr. Campbell. “Because it’s so ridiculous what we wanted to do: To bring something back to life after 20,000 years and study it. But we did it” [Pittsburgh Post-Gazette].

Scientists use 'Jurassic Park' experiment to try to bring woolly mammoth back from the dead

Woolly mammoths could one day walk the Earth again, it seems.


In an extraordinary Jurassic Park- style experiment, DNA from a frozen specimen of the extinct giant was used to reproduce their blood.

And it revealed that the beasts used more than their distinctive shaggy coats to keep warm in harsh Arctic conditions 25,000 years ago - they had antifreeze in their veins.

The scientists believe the genetic adaptation technique could be used to resurrect body parts and proteins from other extinct animals.

Researcher Prof Kevin Campbell-of the University of Manitoba, Canada, said: 'The molecules are no different than going back in time and taking a blood sample from a real mammoth.'

To recreate the blood, the scientists used DNA preserved in bones from frozen Siberian specimens up to 43,000 years old.

It was used alongside genetic information from their descendants, Asian elephants.

And this revealed the woolly mammoth's blood adapted to cope with the freezing conditions.

Its 'antifreeze blood' was able to carry oxygen around the body even at low temperatures, researchers told Nature Genetics journal.

This is thought to have evolved after mammoth ancestors moved from tropical Africa in an Ice Age.

Recreating a single prehistoric protein does not mean scientists can build a whole animal, though.

And because DNA is not preserved in fossils this technique is unlikely to be used on species that died out millions of years ago.

The project began seven years ago when Prof Campbell contacted the Australian Centre for Ancient DNA at Adelaide University.

In the movie and novel Jurassic Park, DNA preserved in an insect trapped in amber millions of years ago is used to recreate dinosaurs.

Woolly mammoths resurfacing in Siberia

The bones and tusks of the ancient creatures are becoming more prevalent as permafrost thaws. Now entire villages are surviving on the trade in mammoth bones.

Reporting from Moscow - The beasts had long lain extinct and forgotten, embedded deep in the frozen turf, bodies swaddled in Earth's layers for thousands of years before Christ.

Now, the Russian permafrost is offering up the bones and tusks of the woolly mammoths that once lumbered over the tundra. They are shaped into picture frames, chess sets, pendants. They are gathered and piled, carved and whittled, bought and sold on the Internet.

The once-obscure scientists who specialize in the wastelands of Siberia have opened lucrative sidelines as bone hunters, spending the summer months trawling the northern river banks and working networks of locals to gather stockpiles of bones. They speak of their work proudly, and a little mystically.

"You need to have luck to find bones," said Fyodor Romanenko, a geologist at Moscow State University. "I don't look for bones. I find them. They find me.

"Every find gives you a huge joy," he said. "It's a gift from nature, from the Arctic, from fate."

The mammoth finds have been growing steadily over the last three decades as Russia's vast sea of permafrost slowly thaws.

Russian scientists disagree over whether global warming is responsible. Some say yes, others are skeptical. But nobody argues that the permafrost is dwindling -- and they're glad to have the bones and tusks, especially when the increased yields coincide with bans on elephant ivory.

Hand-to-mouth reindeer herders on Russia's desolate tundra have coexisted with the traces of mammoths for generations. Romanenko claims that there are cases of long-frozen mammoth meat being thawed and cooked, or fed to the dogs.

Now entire villages are surviving on the trade in mammoth bones. And a new verb has entered the vernacular: mamontit, or "to mammoth" -- meaning, to go out in search of bones.

"People used to just come across bones and throw them aside or take them to the garbage, because they were not interested in them," said Gennady Tatarinov, who oversees a reindeer farm in Anyuisk, a frigid village 4,000 miles northeast of Moscow.

"But now there's a big demand," Tatarinov said. "And of course there's a lot of competition, and people who make it their main trade."

Many of the populated areas have been picked clean, driving scavengers deeper and deeper into the wilderness in the hunt for bones.

The smoothest bones go to collectors and museums around the world; the less perfect samples are shipped to carving factories, especially in China, where they are refashioned into high-end household items and keepsakes.

The price has dropped sharply in recent months. The global financial crisis coincided with a massive sell-off of elephant ivory in Africa to gut the price of mammoth bones: The cost for a kilogram (2.2 pounds) of high-quality bone plunged from $700 to $220.

Still, 50 tons of mammoth bone are turned up every year in Russia -- and the number keeps growing.

"It's the highest it's ever been," said Fyodor Shidlovsky, head of the National Alliance, a network of search groups, coastal exploration bases, restoration workrooms and carving shops.

Shidlovsky recently asked the government to recognize him as a small-business owner. "They refused," he says, smirking. "They said, 'Your business is not small.' "

Shidlovsky has long been infected with a passion for Russia's great white north. Every year since 1979, he has ventured to Siberia from June until deep into the fall, gathering bones and wading through the paperwork needed to ship them to Moscow.

He spends the rest of the year in Moscow, presiding over a kitschy Ice Age museum and peddling his finds in hopes of financing the next year's expedition.

He lounged behind his desk in the museum office on a recent morning. Outside his door, schoolchildren climbed onto a platform and gawked down into a hole at the "mammoth in a pit," the re-creation of a woolly mammoth snared in a trap by ancient man.

The wild-haired creature's head rears below them, tusks high, plastic eyes panicked. The creature's trunk is wired to flail sorrowfully.

At the other end of a showroom of elaborately carved chess sets, Shidlovsky pointed to a massive, wall-mounted television screen and pressed "play" on a remote control.

Suddenly there were images of Shidlovsky trawling the summer-thawed rivers of Siberia in a motorboat to pry bones from the exposed banks. Workers wrapped the relics in plastic bags, loaded them onto pickups and sent them off to the airport.

"Once or twice a year I buy material from the local population, and indulge in enlightening them on how to preserve and what to look for and what not," Shidlovsky said. "I give some lectures at schools. And it brought results."

In truth, this trade is not entirely novel. Man has been hunting mammoths in Russia's icy north as far as memory reaches. The permafrost holds bones that bear workmanship from the Stone Age -- which scientists in Siberia sometimes call the "bone age" in homage to the many weapons and tools hacked from mammoth bones.

Wealthy Chinese imported the bones in the 1st century, and when the first Russians arrived in the far reaches of Siberia in the 17th century, they traded bones along with furs.

"It used to be when we found bones we'd donate them to museums for displays and samples," Romanenko said.

"Now we register them, get the carbon date and either give them as gifts or..." He paused.

"They make good souvenirs," he said finally, shrugged, and smiled sheepishly. "Mammoths are considered a national treasure of Russia."

Mammoths Hung on Longer? Late-Surviving Megafauna Exposed by Ancient DNA in Frozen Soil

ScienceDaily (Dec. 15, 2009) — Extinct woolly mammoths and ancient American horses may have been grazing the North American steppe for several thousand years longer than previously thought. After plucking ancient DNA from frozen soil in central Alaska, a team of researchers used cutting-edge techniques to uncover "genetic fossils" of both species locked in permafrost samples dated to between 7,600 and 10,500 calendar years.

This new evidence suggests that at least one population of these now-extinct mammals endured longer in the continental interior, challenging the conventional view that these and other large species, or megafauna, disappeared from the Americas about 12,000 years ago.

"We don't know how long it takes to pinch out a species," says Ross MacPhee, Curator of Mammalogy at the American Museum of Natural History. "Extinctions often seem dramatic and sudden in fossil records, but our study provides an idea of what an extinction event might look like in real time, with imperiled species surviving in smaller and smaller numbers until eventually disappearing completely."

At the end of the Pleistocene, the geological epoch roughly spanning 12,000 to 2.5 million years ago, many of the world's megafauna, such as giant sloths, saber-toothed cats, dire wolves, stag-moose, and mammoths, vanish from the geological record. Some large species such as Equus caballus, the species from which the domestic horse derives, became extinct in North America but persisted in small populations elsewhere. Because of the apparent sudden disappearance of many megafaunal species in North America, some scientists have proposed cataclysmic explanations like human overhunting, an extraterrestrial impact, and the introduction of novel infectious diseases. The swiftness of the extinctions, however, is not suggested directly by the fossils themselves but is inferred from radiocarbon dating of bones and teeth discovered on the surface or buried in the ground. Current "macrofossil" evidence places the last-known mammoths and wild horses between 13,000 and 15,000 years ago.

But hard remains of animals are rarely preserved, difficult to find, and laborious to accurately date because of physical degradation. Because of this, MacPhee and co-authors Eske Willerslev of the University of Copenhagen in Denmark, Richard Roberts of the University of Wollongong in Australia, and Duane Froese of the University of Alberta in Canada decided to tackle the problem by dating the "last survivors" through dirt. Frozen sediments from the far north of Siberia and Canada can preserve small fragments of animal and plant DNA exceptionally well, even in the complete absence of any visible organic remains, such as bone or wood.

"In principle, you can take a pinch of dirt collected under favorable circumstances and uncover an amazing amount of forensic evidence regarding what species were on the landscape at the time," says Willerslev, director of the Centre for GeoGenetics at the University of Copenhagen. "The use of ancient DNA offers the possibility of being able to sample previous life within the last 400,000 years, freeing us from having to rely on skeletal and other macrofossil evidence as the only way to collect information about species that are no longer with us."

In order to prospect for genetic fossils, the team collected soil cores from undisturbed Alaskan permafrost. Wind-blown Stevens Village, situated on the bank of the Yukon River, fit the bill perfectly. Here, sediments were sealed in permafrost soon after deposition. Two independent methods (radiocarbon and optically stimulated luminescence) were used to date plant remains and individual mineral grains found in the same layers as the DNA.

"With these two techniques, we can be confident that the deposits from which the DNA was recovered haven't been contaminated since these lost giants last passed this way," said Roberts, director of the Centre for Archaeological Science at the University of Wollongong. "It's a genetic graveyard, frozen in time."

Cores collected at Stevens Village offer a clear picture of the local Alaskan fauna at the end of the last ice age. The oldest sediments, dated to about 11,000 years ago, contain remnant DNA of Arctic hare, bison, and moose; all three animals were also found in higher, more recent layers, as would be expected. But one core, deposited between 7,600 and 10,500 years ago, confirmed the presence of both mammoth and horse DNA. To make certain that the integrity of this sample had not been compromised by geologic processes (for example, that ancient DNA had not blown into the surface soils), the team did extensive surface sampling in the vicinity of Stevens Village. No DNA evidence of mammoth, horse, or other extinct species was found in modern samples, a result that supports previous studies which have shown that DNA degrades rapidly when exposed to sunlight and various chemical reactions.

"The fact that we scored with only one layer is not surprising," says MacPhee. "When you start going extinct, there will be fewer and fewer feet on the ground, and thus less and less source material for ancient DNA such as feces, shed dermal tissues, and decaying bodies."

The team also developed a statistical model to show that mammoth and horse populations would have dwindled to a few hundred individuals by 8,000 years ago.

"At this point, mammoths and horses were barely holding on. We may actually be working with the DNA of some of the last members of these species in North America," says permafrost expert Froese, associate professor in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Alberta. "The Yukon Flats includes large shifting river bars with an abundance of high quality forage where large mammals can and could make a living. There may have been a handful of similar sites in Alaska, hosting small remnant populations," says Froese.

"Dirt DNA has lots of exciting potential to contribute to extinction debates in other parts of the world too, as well as a range of archaeological questions," said Willerslev, who also points out that the approach is not restricted to looking back at the past. "We can also use it to make a list of modern species living in any particular location," he said. "This kind of information is really valuable for studies of animals that are hard to detect, and there are some neat forensic applications too."

The new paper is published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. In addition to Willerslev, MacPhee, Froese, and Roberts, authors include James Haile, Morten Rasmussen, and Thomas Gilbert of the University of Copenhagen in Denmark; Alberto Reyes, and Simon Robinson of the University of Alberta in Canada; Lee Arnold and Martina Demuro of the University of Wollongong in Australia; Rasmus Nielsen and Kasper Munch of the University of California at Berkeley; Barry Brook, Jeremy Austin, and Alan Cooper of the University of Adelaide in Australia; Ian Barnes of the Royal Holloway University of London in the United Kingdom; and Per Moller of Lund University in Sweden. It's a compelling story, offering a simple explanation to the mystery of why mammoths, mastodons, and Clovis humans vanished. But it's a controversial theory, and new research suggests the impact was far too small to have done any serious damage.

Doubts centre on the speed of extinctions, the fate of the Clovis culture, and the presence of supposed impact signatures. But advocates of the comet-blast theory say they will present their own new data at the American Geophysical Union (AGU) meeting in San Francisco, where they will share the stage with sceptics.

"Nothing special happened at 12,900 years ago," says John Williams of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His data, reported in Science this week, suggest that large mammals were already rare well before the purported impact.

Lyuba, who was thought to be just one month old, was discovered three years ago when nomadic reindeer dug her up.

Scientists believe she died after being sucked into a river bed.

Mud was found in her trunk and throat, suggesting she had suffocated.

The body is preserved enough to provide DNA samples, but the prospect cloning the creature is still a long way off.

Researchers found the animals' hump acted like a furnace, which helped maintain body temperature during colder weather.

This supports the theory that mammoths were born in early spring.

Lyuba is being transported to Chicago to be exhibited in the Field Museum, where she will be the star attraction at a mammoths and mastodons exhibit.

Lead curator of the team studying the mammoth, Daniel Fisher, said: "There's a visceral awe that takes hold of you looking at a specimen like Lyuba.

"The exhibition as a whole demonstrates how close we can come to knowing what these animals were like."

As the body was so well preserved, researchers have already learnt more about mammoths from it than any previous discoveries.

"We had no idea from preserved skeletons and preserved carcasses that young mammoths had a discrete structure on the back of the head of brown fat cells," Mr Fisher told reporters.

Lyuba is going to be exhibited in 10 cities across the world, with the final stop on the tour being London's Natural History Museum in 2014.

Mammoths survived late in Britain

Woolly mammoths lived in Britain as recently as 14,000 years ago, according to new radiocarbon dating evidence.

Dr Adrian Lister obtained new dates for mammoth bones unearthed in the English county of Shropshire in 1986.

His study in the Geological Journal shows the great beasts remained part of Britain's wildlife for much longer than had previously been supposed.

Mammoths may finally have died out when forests encroached on the grassland habitats they favoured for grazing.

The radiocarbon results from the adult male and four juvenile mammoths from Condover, Shropshire, reveal that the great beasts were in Britain more than 6,000 years longer than had previously been thought.

Researchers had supposed that mammoths disappeared from North-West Europe between 21,000 and 19,000 years ago, during a climatic freeze known as the last glacial maximum (LGM).

Britain's mammoth populations may indeed have vanished with this big chill.

But according to the new study, they were not gone forever. Instead, they returned when conditions eased and clung on in southern England until 14,000 years ago.

"What this usually means is that (mammoths) die out locally and then re-emigrate from refugia somewhere else," Dr Lister told BBC News.

Purification method

The specimens have been radiocarbon dated before. But the Natural History Museum researcher used a relatively new method of radiocarbon dating to get very accurate ages for the Condover fossils.

"The big issue with all radiocarbon dating is contamination from different sources. You have to be sure the sample you extracted from the fossil is absolutely pure," said Dr Lister.

"There have to be methods for purifying the sample that is extracted from the bone. In the last few years, a new method of purification has been developed at Oxford University called ultra-filtration."

"Various bone specimens that were dated before they developed this new purification method have been shown to be out by a significant amount. Not always, but often. What they do is re-run the sample using the new method and obtain a more accurate date. That's what we did here."

Other large mammals that disappeared as the last Ice Age relented include woolly rhino, bison and giant deer.

At the same time as these species were vanishing from the Earth, human populations were expanding.

Similar die-outs of so-called "megafauna" occurred around the world at similar times, prompting some scientists to ask whether climate or human hunting played the dominant role in their extinction.

Human question

No traces of human occupation were found at the Shropshire site. But it is entirely possible that humans could have been in Britain at the same time as these last mammoths.

Dr Lister said that humans might have finished off some of the last remaining pockets of mammoths in Siberia. But he did not think people were the main cause of megafaunal extinctions at the end of the last Ice Age.

During the Ice Age, grasslands were commonplace in Europe because conditions were too cold for trees.

But as the climate warmed up, forests began to spread north, squeezing out the grassland habitats favoured by the majestic beasts.

"It's driven by climate change, but it's not the climate - in the main - that affects these animals. The climate affects the vegetation and the vegetation affects them," said Dr Lister.

"These were grass-eating animals."

Mammoths first appeared in the Pliocene Epoch, about 4.8 million years ago.

One population lived on in isolation on Russia's remote Wrangel Island until about 5,000 years ago, making them the most recent surviving population known to science.

Tales of found bones — and, oh yes, la chupacabra

WORTHINGTON — What is this thing with bones?

Every time I pick up a newspaper lately, I find something about bones.

The Daily Globe was telling about the mystery skull at the Nobles County Historical Society. I figure this is another peanut butter victim. The U.S. never has enforced peanut product investigations.

The way I analyze it, some kid over-dipped on peanut butter in the old Central Elementary cafeteria. The youngster then lifted up and began stumbling ahead, blindly, staggering across the street and into the Historical Society storage area before he collapsed. Nothing remains but a skull. We have to watch it with peanut butter.

Next newspaper I pick up is telling about the skull of the great Apache chief Geronimo. (You’re going to think I am making up these things. I am not.)

The claim is in 1918 members of Yale’s elite Skull & Bones society were at Fort Sill, Okla., where they secretly lifted Geronimo’s skull from his grave and carried their trophy back to their Yalie club rooms. Geronimo’s family is now filing suit demanding the return of Grandpa’s head.

Then there is the report from Hancock Park in Los Angeles. Researchers are digging under a parking lot — you can do things in California you can’t do other places. The diggers came upon the fossil of a mammoth that is so huge they are calling it mammoth. (I’m sorry. They say this, not me.) The diggers named their mammoth mammoth Zed and the reporter says, “The paleontologists are downright giddy.” This may be another reaction to peanut butter. Or something.

On to another newspaper.

John Ackerman owns a furniture restoration business and 32 underground caves south of Rochester. (This is according to Dick Merryhew, who used to report for the Daily Globe. He’s good.)

Ackerman was poking around in one of his caves when he came upon the skull of a saber-tooth tiger with canine teeth seven inches long. It is thought the creature weighed 650 pounds. Even Jesse Ventura would not be able to deal with it.

The importance of this discovery — to someone — is that it proves saber-tooth creatures prowled within Minnesota’s boundaries.

I have been holding off telling the most gross of all these curious accounts.

In July 2007, Phylis Canion of Cuero, Texas — yes, Cuero, the Texas turkey town — Mrs. Canion found the body of a creature along Highway 183, near the turn-off to her ranch. This creature is tentatively labeled La Chupacabra, the legendary Goat Sucker. The story has been ballyhooed on television, of course, but it even is being printed in newspapers.

La Chupacabra (if so it be) is a hairless, dog-like creature about 40 inches long estimated to weigh about 30 pounds. This is another one of those things with long fangs. Big ears. The hind legs are slightly longer than the front legs. Color of the elephant-like skin is labeled “grayish-blue.”

Reports now are that in those mid-July days Mrs. Canion and her country neighbors found bodies of three such animals. The plucky Texas rancher cut the head off the body she found along the highway and put it in a freezer. With the head, she says, she hopes “to get to the bottom of its ancestry through DNA testing.” She plans to have the head mounted for display in her home.

The Texans speculate heavy rains in 2007 drove the animals out of dens to high ground. Following the rains, Mrs. Canion says she lost eight kittens and 26 chickens, all with their blood drained from them. Chupacabra is a kind of vampire.

Texas State University and the Texas Parks & Wildlife Service are on the case.

The thing that bothers me is that T-shirts have been put on sale: “2007, The Summer of the Chupacabra, Cuero, Texas.” Cuero is getting recognition as the Chupacabra Capital of America.

This is where I draw a line.

I never was wholly accepting of the Worthington/Cuero turkey link. I liked my Turkey Days without the Texas sauce.

But — if anyone thinks Worthington must now respond to the Cuero challenge by rearing a local pack of Chupacabras for a race along 10th Street on Chupacabra Day, I am saying, “Forget it!”

Don’t even think about it.

Woolly mammoths roamed Earth thousands of years ago during the last Ice Age. Even though the furry elephant-like creatures are now extinct, scientists are learning about mammoths from fossils and body parts frozen in ice.

Recently, scientists from Pennsylvania State University analyzed the DNA, or chemical that carries hereditary information, from hairs that had been plucked from a woolly mammoth that was frozen in the Siberian snow for roughly 20,000 years. This is the first time anyone has sequenced the genome (an organism's complete sequence of DNA) of an extinct animal.

The scientists compared the mammoth's DNA with genetic material from elephants. It turns out, the animals' genes are nearly identical to each other. This means that if scientists were to take DNA from an elephant and change it just a little, they possibly could re-create a living woolly mammoth.

"I would like to see a woolly mammoth and maybe my grandchildren will," says Webb Miller who co-headed the study.

Major cache of fossils found in Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES - The largest known deposit of fossils from the last ice age has been found in what might seem to be the unlikeliest of places - under an old May Co. parking lot in this city's tony Miracle Mile shopping district.

Researchers from the George C. Page Museum at La Brea Tar Pits have barely begun extracting the fossils from the sandy, tarry soil, but they expect the find to double the size of the museum's collection from the period, already the largest in the world.

Among their finds, formally announced Wednesday, is the nearly intact skeleton of a Columbian mammoth - named Zed by researchers - a prize discovery because only bits and pieces of mammoths previously have been found in the tar pits.

But researchers are perhaps even more excited about finding smaller fossils of tree trunks, turtles, snails, clams, millipedes, fish, gophers and even mats of oak leaves. The first excavators at La Brea threw out similar items in their haste to find prized animal bones, and crucial information about the period was lost.

"This gives us the opportunity to get a detailed picture of what life was like 10,000 to 40,000 years ago" in the Los Angeles Basin, said John Harris, chief curator at the Page. The find will make the museum "the major library of life in the Pleistocene ice age," he said.

Because of its need for haste, the team is pioneering a technique for extracting the fossils. Most paleontologists spend days to weeks carefully sifting through the soil at the site of a dig. In this case, however, huge chunks of soil have been removed intact and now sit in large wooden crates on the back lot of the Page.

The 23 crates range in size from 5 feet by 5 feet by 5 feet to 19 feet by 12 feet by 10 feet - from the size of a desk to that of a small delivery truck - and are responsible for the excavation's informal name, Project23.

The site of the old two-story parking garage, formerly used by the defunct May Co., is adjacent to the Page. The Page's sister museum, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, owned the building and had razed it to construct an underground parking garage that would restore parkland above the structure.

The entire Rancho La Brea area is a treasure chest for paleontologists. Petroleum from the huge underground oil fields oozed to the surface over the millenniums, forming bogs that trapped and killed unsuspecting animals and then preserved their skeletons. It is now a protected site, though dispensation was granted to build the new garage.

Because of the historic nature of the area, the work had to be overseen by a salvage archaeologist. In this case, the work fell to Robin Turner, founder of ArchaeoPaleo Resource Management Inc. of Culver City on Los Angeles' west side, who previously had overseen work on other sites at or near the tar pits. Her group hit pay dirt when the excavation got about 10 feet below the surface.

"I knew we would find fossils ... but I never expected to find so many deposits," Turner said.

"There was an absolutely remarkable quantity and quality."

There were 16 separate deposits on the site, an amount that, by her estimate, would have taken 20 years to excavate conventionally. But with Los Angeles County Museum of Art officials prodding her "to get those things out of our way" so they could build their garage, she had to find another way.

Her solution was similar to that used to move large trees. Carefully identifying the edges of each deposit, her team dug trenches around them and underneath, isolating the deposits on dirt pedestals. After wrapping heavy plastic around the deposits, workers built wooden crates similar to tree boxes and lifted them out with a heavy crane. The biggest deposit weighed 123,000 pounds.

"We designed a crate so that we could take out the entire deposit without disturbing it, so that at a later date you could do a proper excavation, as you would if it were still in the ground," she said.

In 3 1/2 months, working seven days a week, she and her colleagues removed the deposits and delivered them to the Page Museum two years ago. For some of the deposits, they had to wear oxygen tanks with full gas masks because of high levels of hydrogen sulfide escaping from the soil.

The only exceptions to the crating process were the mammoth named Zed and a horse skull. Because they were separate from the others, they were partially excavated and encased in plastic casts for cleaning at the museum - the conventional technique for recovering fossils.

Curators are excited about Zed because he appears to be about 80 percent complete, missing only one rear leg, a vertebra and the top of his skull, which was shaved off by excavation equipment.

Curators collected 34 mammoths in the initial excavations of the La Brea Tar Pits from 1906 to 1914. "But they were all disarticulated bones, jumbled together," said paleontologist Christopher A. Shaw, collections manager at the Page Museum. Mammoths on display there are assembled from bones of many animals.

Zed's tusks also are nearly intact - another rarity because they are made of dentine, which is much more fragile than teeth or bones.

Zed's skeleton is being cleaned in the museum's "fishbowl" preparation room, and the team of paleontologists and volunteers has completed only his jawbone and some vertebrae. All researchers know so far is that he stood about 10 feet tall at the hip and was 47 to 49 years old. Mammoths typically lived about 60 years.

Curators have found three broken ribs that healed before his death. He probably got them from fighting with other male mammoths, said Shelley M. Cox, who is supervising the cleaning.

The team has begun digging through the largest crate but has excavated only an area that is about 6 feet by 4 feet and 2 1/2 feet deep. From that area, they have removed a complete skeleton of a saber-tooth cat, six dire wolf skulls and bones from two other saber-tooth cats, a giant ground sloth and a North American lion. The tar has yielded more than 700 plant and animal specimens, 400 of which have been cataloged.

The team does not know the ages of the deposits yet. Previous specimens from the area date from 10,000 to 40,000 years ago, and there is no reason to suspect these will be any different, but each must be radio-carbon dated.

Individual fossil deposits in the area generally cover a span of about 2,000 years, Harris said, and deposits just a few feet apart can be separated in time by thousands to tens of thousands of years.

"Hopefully, the 16 [new] deposits will have 16 different ages," Shaw said.
