An avalanche of more than 100 apples rained down over a main road in Keresley, Coventry on Monday night.
The street was left littered with apples after they pelted car windscreens and bonnets just after rush-hour.
The bizarre downpour may have been caused by a current of air that lifted the fruit from a garden or orchard, releasing it over the junction of Keresley Road and Kelmscote Road.
One driver said: "The apples fell out of the sky as if out of nowhere. They were small and green and hit the bonnet hard.
"There were other cars on the road at the time too and everyone had to stop their cars suddenly.
"It wouldn't surprise me if some cars were damaged. I know the area well and there are no apple trees around."
Yesterday, the smashed apples could still be seen up and down the 20-yard stretch of road.
Dave Meakins, a retired fork lift truck driver, said he thought the apples had been thrown as a prank by children.
"I honestly don't know where the apples could have come from," he said.
"I assumed kids must have thrown them because we do get the occasional egg and apple thrown but there's way too much for that.
"I would love to know where they came from."
Some said they thought the apples had fallen from a passing plane.
Keresley parish councillor Sandra Camwell said a freak black-out happened on the same road last year.
She said: "Strange things do happen in this part of the world. I think it's highly likely that apples did fall from the sky.
"We're in an area with a spooky history, where there have been witches for centuries, after all."
The Met Office said it was possible the apples had been scooped up by a tornado.
He said: "It's hypothetically possible that a tornado could have picked them up and that they were transported in turbulent air until they fell."
Jim Dale, senior meteorologist, from British Weather Services, said: "The weather we have at the moment is very volatile and we probably have more to come.
"Essentially these events are caused when a vortex of air, kind of like a mini tornado, lifts things off the ground rising up into the atmosphere until the air around it causes them to fall to earth again.
"Returning polar maritime air is such an unstable condition and it basically means air returning from the polar regions which is very unstable.
"We've all heard of the fish and frogs falling from the sky and apples is certainly unusual because they have some weight to them but it is not out of the realms of possibility."

Heavens above, they're desert flying fish

THE freak phenomenon of fish raining from the sky continued with another load found bucketing down in a Territory community.
The small bait could be found en masse at the airport strip in Lajamanu - about 550km southwest of Katherine. Territory politician Rob Knight was flabbergasted to find the fish on the red soil on the edge of the Tanami Desert - hundreds of kilometres from Lake Argyle and Lake Elliot. "These fish had not long been on the ground," he said. The NT News reported on February 28 last year how Lajamanu was covered not once, but twice, by fish falling from the sky.
Local Aged Care Centre co-ordinator Christine Balmer said then she had to pinch herself when she found "hundreds".
"These fish were alive when they hit the ground," she said.
A tornado may be responsible for the phenomenon.
But Mr Knight speculated increased UFO activity in the Top End, as often reported in the NT News was behind the wacky appearance.

It's raining fish ... no really

WHILE the Top End and Central Australia have been battered by torrential rains, a Territory town has had fish falling from the sky.
The freak phenomena happened not once, but twice, on Thursday and Friday afternoon about 6pm at Lajamanu, about 550km southwest of Katherine.
NEWSBREAKER Christine Balmer, who took these photos of the fish on the ground and in a bucket, had to pinch herself when she was told "hundreds and hundreds" of small white fish had fallen from the sky.
"It rained fish in Lajamanu on Thursday and Friday night," she said, "They fell from the sky everywhere.
"Locals were picking them up off the footy oval and on the ground everywhere.
"These fish were alive when they hit the ground."
Mrs Balmer, the aged care co-ordinator at the Lajamanu Aged Care Centre, said her family interstate thought she had lost the plot when she told them about the event.
"I haven't lost my marbles," she said, reassuring herself. "Thank god it didn't rain crocodiles."
Lajamanu sits on the edge of the Tanami Desert, hundreds of kilometres from Lake Argyle and Lake Elliott and even further from the coast. But it's not the first time the remote community has been bombarded by fins from above.
In 2004, locals reported fish falling from the sky, and in 1974, a similar incident captured international headlines.
The small white fish are believed to be spangled perch, which are very common through much of northern Australia.
Weather bureau senior forecaster Ashley Patterson said the geological conditions were perfect on Friday for a tornado in the Douglas Daly region.
He said it would have been an ideal weather situation to allow the phenomena to occur - but no tornados have been reported to the authority.
"It's a very unusual event," he said. "With an updraft, (fish and water picked up) could get up high - up to 60,000 or 70,000 feet.
"Or possibly from a tornado over a large water body - but we haven't had any reports," he said.

Tadpole downpour stumps Japanese meteorologists
The rainy season has just started in Tokyo, but residents in a small coastal town have reported a different phenomenon: tadpoles dropping out of the sky.An office clerk in Nanao first noticed the anomaly when he heard a dull thud in a parking lot last week, news reports said.
Looking around, he saw about 100 dead tadpoles splattered on car windscreens and on the ground.
More reports followed from bewildered residents in Nanao.
"People speculate that a waterspout picked them up and dropped them from the air," an official at a local weather observatory said.
"But from a meteorological point of view, I have to say it is most unlikely.
"We have checked the weather conditions of last week, thinking gusts of wind might have hit the area but confirmed no damage.
"To be honest, I don't think it was anything caused by a weather condition."
Similar events have been reported around the world, with whirlwinds passing over water bodies and picking up frogs, jellyfish or other unfortunate animals before dumping them back to earth.
